Iowa FITNESSGRAM Initiative

Picture
The Iowa FitnessGram Initiative is a participatory research network focused on promoting and evaluating school physical education programming. The project is supported by the Cooper Institute who has provided schools with access to FitnessGram software to support use by schools. Programming has evolved to also support pilot research on other assessments including the Youth Activity Profile, the incorporation of musculoskeletal fitness programming and assessments, as well as the use of a novel motor skills tool called the Dragon Challenge (developed and widely used in the UK). The Iowa FitmessGram Initiative has helped schools collect and compile data on youth fitness using the FitnessGram software. The summary here reflects aggregated fitness levels from a total of 81 schools that participated in this regional surveillance project. The team compiled over 66,000 fitnessgram records to help examine patterns and trends. The achievement of the FITNESSGRAM Healthy Fitness Zone for the various FITNESSGRAM assessments can be examined by age and gender in the slideshow images to the right. Select among the five tests to view them individually.
