Student Research opportunities
The PAHP lab has several opportunities for students to get involved in both research and service in both the campus and Ames community. The best way to get involved is through supervised research courses that provide opportunities to learn while also earning course credit and enhancing your transcript. Students looking to get involved in any PAHP lab opportunities are encouraged to email Dr. Greg Welk at [email protected] for more information.
Kin 290 / HON 290 - Supervised Research Experience

Experiential courses such as Kin 294x and Kin 494 are designed to give students more specific skills and to have opportunities to contribute to more clinically focused research and behavioral interventions conducted in the PAHP lab. The following courses are intentionally linked to the ExerCYse is Medicine initiative.
Kin 294 - Practicum in Adult Fitness Assessment
Targeted at sophomore level students this course aims to familiarize students with many of the commonly used field assessments for assessing physical fitness in adults and older adults. Students will learn test protocols and refine their skills with peer participants before transitioning to assess adults from the local community in both research and clinical settings. Students who complete Kin 294 are also eligible to become program leaders in the ongoing Walk with Ease study. |
Kin 494 - Practicum in Motivational Interviewing
This Part A/Part B course is targeted at junior and senior level students and is designed to provide the knowledge and skills to apply Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help support behavior change. Part A of the course focuses on learning the skills through online content and in-class activities as well as self practice Part B connects students with students from the ISU campus who are looking to make lifestyle changes. Students who complete Part B are also eligible to engage as a Health Coach in the Walk with Ease project and other related research projects. |
Student Research Assistantships
Students can also have opportunities to work in the lab as an Undergraduate Research Assistant or through Work Study experiences. Priority for paid research experiences will be given to Junior and Senior level students and / or students that have engaged in the foundational training courses in the PAHP lab referenced above. These roles will enable leadership opportunities and more structured involvement in project management. This will help students to develop a variety of skills including interacting with participants, data collection, management and presentation, organization skills, as well as numerous study specific skills.
