Walk with Ease
To avoid program interruptions due to the holiday season, we have paused new program enrollments at this time. If you are interested in joining our January cohort, we will be happy to accept your referral forms and will notify you when we begin again in mid-January!
8/7/2020 UPDATE - Due to social distancing guidelines, we are still unable to offer enrollment in the group-exercise version of Walk with Ease. However, we have modified the self-directed program to offer a "no-contact" version of the program to support enrollment while respecting concerns about participant health. For more information see below.
Background
Walk with Ease is an evidence-based activity program developed by the Arthritis Foundation and recommended by the CDC for the management of the symptoms of arthritis. Currently offered in both individual and group-based formats, the program has been shown to effectively help participants improve their pain symptoms, reduce physical limitations, and improve symptom management self-efficacy.
The program focuses on integrating physical activity in the form of walking into your daily routine. The program is designed to meet participants at their current fitness level and progress gradually over its six-week duration, while also providing the knowledge to continue progressing after the program is complete.

Study materials will be delivered by mail and all assessments will be completed online in the no-contact version to allow individuals to participate in the program without risking their health.

- Group Option: The group program option consists of 3 self-paced, one hour long walking sessions each week for 6 weeks, with a goal of increasing walking ability each week. Sessions are held at predetermined times and locations to help create a consistent walking routine and to allow interactions with peers and program leaders.
- Self-Directed Option: The self-directed program option provides the same included in the group sessions, but with the freedom to complete the walking sessions independently. Participants receive a guidebook with education content and are also given the opportunity to be guided by a trained student health coach to provide motivation and support.
